Huntsville FP launches podcast to explore the future of primary care
By Jonathan Nelson
Need a new podcast to liven your commute? Lane Aiena, MD, hopes you’ll check out his new project, “Doc to the Future,” a half-hour podcast aimed at exploring the ever-changing field of primary care. The first three episodes just dropped on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other podcast services. Guests include TAFP CEO Tom Banning; medical director of Lone Star Family Medicine in Conroe, Daniel Porter, MD; and nationally recognized physician leader, Peter Valenzuela, MD.
The first three episodes constitute a deep dive into value-based care, a concept that drove Aiena to create the podcast. At this spring’s C. Frank Webber Lectureship and Interim Session, an executive from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas spoke to the TAFP Board of Directors about the company’s value-based care contracts and how they will likely affect patients and physicians over the next few years. Aiena, who was present for the discussion, says he left the meeting with many questions.
“I didn’t understand a word of it. And I realized that there’s probably a pretty good portion of us, especially us rural doctors, who are pretty plugged into our practices and not exactly looking toward what’s coming down the pipeline. We just haven’t been exposed to it.”
Since early in the pandemic, Aiena has worked with local radio station KSAM to put on a weekly spot called “Thursday Morning House Call.” With the experience and relationships he’s gained doing the show, a podcast seemed like the perfect way to help educate his colleagues and himself on the ever-changing world of primary care.
By launching the first three episodes right before TAFP holds its 2022 Annual Session and Primary Care Summit, Aiena hopes to maximize his exposure for the podcast. More episodes are already in production, so expect to hear great conversations with excellent guests in the coming months.
“I’m really happy with the quality of the content and I’m genuinely excited for our membership to listen,” he says. “I think there is quite a bit to learn in this.”
