Texas Family Medicine Scholars Program

First-year residents can apply for this multi-year program that includes generous financial support and leadership development to one resident each year.

Timeline for licensure procurement

Securing a Texas medical license can be a confusing and frustrating process, particularly for international medical graduates. The Texas Medical Board recommends that IMGs apply six months before the end of their required training, in the middle of their PGY2 year, to allow time to acquire all supporting documents (with the exception of completion of the required training). Then, the TMB only needs confirmation of completion of PGY2 and they can be licensed. Applicants are encouraged to take the jurisprudence exam soon after they apply, as they must pass before a licensing analyst will be assigned to evaluate the contents of their applications and documents.

Texas Physician Education Loan Repayment Program

The Physician Education Loan Repayment Program provides loan repayment funds to physicians who agree to practice in a Health Professional Shortage Area for at least four years. Participating physicians must provide health care services to recipients enrolled in Medicaid and the Texas Children’s Health Insurance Program.

TAFP Research Poster Competition

Sponsored by the TAFP Foundation and the Council on Health of the Public, TAFP’s annual poster competition provides a showcase for the research of family medicine students, residents, and community physicians. The competition occurs in conjunction with TAFP’s Annual Session and Primary Care Summit. Exhibits are designed to demonstrate a specific research activity, evidence-based review, or case report (students only), with an emphasis on practice-based research.
