Texas Family Medicine
Preceptorship Program

Shaping the future of family medicine

TFMPP frequently asked questions

Who can apply?
First- and second-year (pre-clinical) medical students enrolled in a Texas medical school are eligible to participate.

How long is the rotation?

  • Minimum: 10 days in the clinic (holidays when the office is closed don’t count).
  • Maximum: Up to 20 days in the clinic.
  • You only qualify for a stipend if you complete at least 10 days in the clinic.

What will I do during the rotation?
Each rotation experience is unique. Activities will vary depending on your preceptor’s practice, patient population, and your individual interests and learning goals.

How much is the stipend?
Payment is issued only after your preceptor confirms attendance and both the student and preceptor have submitted their evaluations.

  • The stipend depends on rotation length and location.
  • Stipends are considered taxable income; you’ll need to submit a W-9.
  • You’ll receive a 1099-MISC if you are paid.

Sample amounts for a 20-day rotation:

  • Rural, HPSA, MUA areas: $250 per day, max of $5000 for 20 days
  • Urban area: $150 per day, max of $3,000 for 20 days

Shorter rotations are proportionally less.

  • Rural – 1) Enter the preceptor’s address 2) click run report on the map; and 3) make sure the county is non-metro and that the population is less than 125,000.

Do I have to commit to family medicine?
No. While the program highlights the value of family medicine, participation is open to all students interested in hands-on clinical experience.

Can I rotate with a physician I already know?
Yes, provided the physician meets these requirements:

  1. Completed a 3-year family medicine residency
  2. Be board certified in family medicine
  3. Have no disciplinary actions from the Texas Medical Board

When do I find out my match?
After submitting your application, TAFP will work to pair you with a preceptor. You’ll receive an email with your match details. Be sure to check your spam folder. You must confirm acceptance promptly as unconfirmed matches may be reassigned. Once matched, contact your preceptor to coordinate scheduling, attire, and other logistics.

What are my responsibilities?

  • Arrive on time, dress professionally, and wear your name badge.
  • Communicate expectations with your preceptor early on.
  • Attend all scheduled days; time off or vacation is not permitted.
  • Notify both your preceptor and TAFP immediately if illness or an emergency arises.
  • Limit cell phone use for professional or educational purposes.
  • Ask how and when feedback will be provided.

Is housing provided in rural areas?
Housing is not provided.

Will I get school credit?
Some medical schools allow TFMPP participation to count toward elective credit. Check with your school’s program coordinator for details.

What if I need to cancel?
Please provide at least 30 days’ notice whenever possible. If you’re already matched, contact TAFP and your preceptor immediately. If you’re not yet matched, contact TAFP to withdraw your application. Students who fail to notify TAFP or their preceptor (“no-call, no-show”) may be ineligible for future participation.

Remember, this is a professional opportunity and must be treated as such. Keeping the lines of communication open between yourself, your preceptor, and TAFP is imperative. If you are a no call/no show to your rotation, you will not be eligible for this program next year.
